Why do you need B12?
Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin. This means that it doesn’t stay in the body for a long period of time. Accordingly, more frequent support with B12 may be needed to maintain healthy B12 levels in the body.1
-
Vitamin B12 is important for energy production, balance–related sports, endurance, healthy red blood cells, and memory, among other functions in the body.2,3
-
Vitamin B12 can be depleted due to poor dietary habits, drinking alcoholic beverages, taking certain medications, and the aging process.2
-
Inadequate B12 intake has been associated with fatigue, unhealthy red blood cells, alcohol-induced liver cell damage, abnormal cell growth, cognitive impairments, neural tube defects, memory loss, and feelings of hopelessness.2-4
-
Regular B12 supplementation is linked to improved balance, energy, and endurance in athletic individuals.3

Different types of B12 work best for different people
Vitamin B12 (also called Cobalamin) can include Hydroxy B12, Methyl B12, Cyano B12, and Adenosyl B12.1 Many vitamins (including B12) that are normally found in food are not in an active form. Instead, the body needs to convert inactive B12 into an active form that can be used directly. B12 is needed for the proper functioning of a number of different enzymes.2 However, not all types of B12 are equal. Furthermore, the body cannot easily convert all types of B12 into the forms that are needed for key reactions in the body. Hydroxy, Methyl, and Adenosyl are natural forms of B12 that are also commercially available and can be used directly for numerous reactions in the body.1 Cyano B12 is a synthetic form that must be converted for use in the body. As the name suggests, Cyanocobalamin contains a cyanide molecule.1
Methyl B12
can be readily used in the body, although it is not tolerated by everyone. Those who become jittery after consuming caffeine may not react as well to Methyl B12. Furthermore, many adults do not respond positively to Methyl B12 in spite of their nutrigenomics,3and in such cases, an alternative form is recommended.
HYDROXY B12
(or Hydroxycobalamin) is a unique form of vitamin B12 that is more easily converted to the active form that promotes numerous reactions in the body.1,4 This might cause you wonder why all products would not simply contain high servings of Hydroxy B12 in their formulations. Hydroxy B12 is more difficult to process for manufacturing purposes, it’s harder to store in an active form, and it’s more expensive than some other forms of B12 such as Cyano B12. For these reasons, many other products do not contain Hydroxy B12 and instead use Cyano B12.
ADENOSYl B12
is a special form of B12 that supports energy production in cells throughout the body. It is important to consume Adenosyl B12, however, please know that this form of B12 is not as versatile as the other forms.3,4 This means it can be taken in lower doses.
CYANO B12
contains a cyanide molecule.1 Accordingly, when you take Cyano B12, your body must first turn it into active B12 in order to use it. Your body must then find a way to get rid of the toxic cyanide molecule. It is important to note that cyanide is a poison. This means that even if the rest of the B12 molecule is good for you and the body uses active B12 to excrete cyanide, this form is not particularly safe.5,6 Therefore, Cyano B12 is not the form your body ultimately needs and taking higher servings may deplete your body’s natural levels of active B12.1,6 This may cause you to wonder why anyone would use Cyano B12 if it can be toxic. In low doses, Cyano B12 helps raise the body’s levels of active B12, but for the most part Cyano B12 is used because it is much less expensive.1 It also demonstrates more heat stability than the other forms of B12, which gives it a longer shelf life.1

Genetic Testing for B12 Support
Genetic Testing can help you determine the best form of B12 to support you. If you have completed Genetic Testing, please consider this DNA Panel. If you are not interested in completing a Genetic Test, Hydroxy B12 and Adenosyl B12 are well tolerated by most1,2:

Why is it important to take advantage of B12 supplementation?
“Oral administration of high-dose vitamin B12 (1 to 2 mg daily) is as effective as intramuscular administration for correcting anemia and neurologic symptoms…Absorption rates improve with supplementation; therefore, patients older than 50 years and vegans or strict vegetarians should consume foods fortified with vitamin B12 or take vitamin B12 supplements,”
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28925645
“Vitamin B12 is essential for DNA synthesis and for cellular energy production…Vitamin B12 deficiency is common, mainly due to limited dietary intake of animal foods or malabsorption of the vitamin. Vegetarians are at risk of vitamin B12 deficiency as are other groups with low intakes of animal foods or those with restrictive dietary patterns. Malabsorption of vitamin B12 is most commonly seen in the elderly…”

“Vitamin B12 is a particularly important vitamin for women of childbearing age and for older people, however, adequate vitamin B12 status over the whole of the lifecycle is needed for optimal health. There has been renewed interest in vitamin B12 since the reporting of associations between homocysteine and chronic disease…”
